How to use Deck Board Calculator
- Measure the board-running direction and deck width.
- Use actual board face width, not nominal lumber size.
- Plan borders, stairs, butt joints, framing, and cut reuse separately.
Formula and assumptions
Rows = ceiling((deck width × 12 + gap) ÷ (board face width + gap)). Total lineal footage = rows × run length, adjusted for waste.
Follow decking specifications for gap and fastening. This is not a load or framing calculation.
Frequently asked questions
Why use actual board width?
Nominal lumber dimensions differ from actual dimensions, changing row count.
Does this include framing?
No, it estimates deck surface boards only.
Can waste be lower?
Careful cut planning may reuse offcuts, but layout details matter.
